I use a power-delivering docking station (model Dell WD19DC) with my Dell laptop that connects via USB-C and I'm hoping to be able to reliably plug in my 2017 15' MacBook Pro as well. So far it works fine with the MacBook - all my devices, including external monitors, connect ok - but I'm unclear about the power delivery aspect. The specs on the WD19DC say that Dell laptops receive 210W of power while non-Dell machines receive 90W. I haven't fried my MacBook yet (as far as I can tell), and it seems to charge just as well as with the OEM Apple charger.
Dell docking station D3100 with MacBook Pro. Ask Question Asked 4 years, 4 months ago. Active 2 years, 3 months ago. Viewed 25k times 5. I am trying to setup 3. Ports: two USB-C ports (PD), two USB-A 3.0 ports, microSD, SD Memory card slot, 4K HDMI, 4K Mini DisplayPort, Thunderbolt 3, Ethernet Build Quality: as with many of the best docking stations, the HyperDrive Pro tries its best to blend with the sleek MacBook design, and to that end it does a good job, with a slimmer design than its rivals, and an aluminum enclosure that comes in MacBook-like. We have a load of new WD19 docks. They work perfectly with Dell Laptops, by which I mean you can have two monitors connected to the dock, and then the additional laptop screen (three in total). The MacBook Pro doesn't work. I get one extra screen, but not the second. I have used a D6000 dock in the past, and that worked fine.

A few questions here that will reveal my ignorance about how electricity works:
- I believe most Dell laptops need ~65W when charging, so am I really receiving 210W with the Dell? Assume this is regulated somewhere along the way (or just results in a faster charge)?
- The 15' MacBook Pro needs ~87W when charging, so if I'm receiving 90W, am I at risk of damaging the machine? Again, assume this is regulated somewhere along the way?
- Is it problematic if I'm actually receiving less than 90W? Have read in other places that using chargers below the required ~87W can damage the battery in the long run.
- Has anyone had any luck with other 'universal' power-delivering docking stations that explicitly support Mac and PC?

Note that this is the DC, not Thunderbolt, version.

Dear All,
Dock For Macbook Pro 16
Following some rather unhelpful discussion here (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8513431) I thought I'd post an update.
2015 Macbook Pro Dock
This dock works perfectly well with my machine, things to note:
(1) the network adaptor appears as USB 10/100/1000 LAN - you might need to add this manually using the [+] button
Use Dell Dock With Macbook Pro
(2) output from the mDP does not appear to support 4k, I had to use HDMI for this.
(3) audio output can be carried via HDMI to the monitor and outputted via a 3.5mm jack on that (if you have it), alternatively you can try plugging your speakers into the back of the dock (output device is Realtek USB Audio). PLEASE Note - if you can't get audio from the jack on the back try the headphone jack on the front - this worked for me.
(4) the 130W version charges my machine fine, no need for the more expensive 180W version - YMMV.
I'm running Mojave 10.14.6
Best wishes,
Jon
